The central government has issued a new warning for PAN card users. The government believes that, if you have obtained a PAN card with the help of an Aadhaar enrollment ID, then you should replace your Aadhaar card with the original Aadhaar card number. Otherwise, your PAN may stop working from 31 December 2025. However, this is not for all Aadhaar card users. A notification has been issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes i.e. CBDT, in which PAN card holders have been instructed to verify with Aadhaar number by 31 December 2025.
Information will have to be given to the Income Tax Department.
If the government notification is to be believed, all PAN holders who have applied for Aadhaar before 1 October 2024 and got a PAN card with enrollment ID will now have to tell their Aadhaar number to the Income Tax Department. According to the notification issued on 3 April 2025, all such PAN cardholders will have to provide their information by 31 December 2025.
Exemption in penalty may be given.
The existing process of PAN-Aadhaar linking will be used to link the PAN card with the Aadhaar number. PAN cardholders will have to complete the PAN-Aadhaar linking process by visiting the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department. Although the last deadline for linking PAN-Aadhaar was 30 June 2023, now a penalty has to be paid for doing so. However those who took PAN with enrollment ID did not have an Aadhaar number at that time, so such PAN card holders could not do the linking within the time limit of 2023. Such PAN card holders can get exemption from penalty.
What will happen if Aadhaar is not given by 31 December 2025?
According to Naveen Badhwa, Vice President of Advisory, Taxman.com, if PAN card holders do not link PAN with Aadhaar number by 31 December 2025, then it is possible that PAN may become inactive from 1 January 2026, but complete information about this can be obtained from the Income Tax Department. If PAN and Aadhaar are not linked by the government, a penalty of Rs 1000 can be imposed.
