Soon after Akshay Kumar starrer Kesari Chapter 2 trailer was released, a clip from a 2019 Channel 4 documentary went viral on social media where General Reginald Dyer’s great-granddaughter Caroline Dyer is seen interacting with Raj Kohli, whose great-uncle Balwant Singh survived the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by hiding under the pile of dead bodies.

In the clip, Caroline is seen praising her great-grandfather as someone who was liked by Indians a lot and “who spoke three or four Indian languages which very few people did”.

As Kohli spoke fondly about his great-uncle, Caroline stated, “Ah, he was a looter, was he a looter.”

This led to Kohli confronting her about her views and he stated that those gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh on April 13, 1919, were not rioters.

She then added, “I think history is history and you've got to accept that and not wallow in it.”

Recently, at Kesari Chapter 2 press conference, Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar were asked about their reactions to the viral clip.

Without mincing any words, Karan Johar blasted Caroline as he said, “Not just as an Indian or as a humanitarian, but anyone who has an iota of empathy or humanity within themselves, it will anger you.”

He added, “I don't want to mince my words, be diplomatic in my answer or certainly beat around the bush when I say, how ridiculous she is to say that and how dare she? She was calling those thousands of people looters? They were innocent people who conglomerated right there for what was meant to be the auspicious day of Baisakhi, thinking something else was going to be the eventuality of the day and look what happened.”

Karan further mentioned that General Dyer admitted that “he only stopped shooting when the bullets ran out.”

He added, “And she went on to say in that interview that he loved India and all kinds of things about how he had the greatest compassion. What love can you have in your heart when your actions only spoke of hate? The fact that she is in a la la land of her own and in some delusion, I don't know her or met her, and I don't wish to meet her.”

He continued, “The fact that she has even said those things, makes me so angry on a humanitarian level. Khoon khaulta hai jab maine wo video dekha with the fact that she has such disdain for one of the biggest genocides in the history of our nation and the world. The fact that she was disdainful of it makes me just angry and want and demand an apology even more.”

Akshay Kumar was then asked to share his views and he said, “One nation’s trauma is another nation’s lesson. That is what she never understood and kept saying history is history. I appreciate what Karan said and the way he said it. I don't think she understood the lesson... And you will see that whole thing, the anger (in the film). By the time the film comes to the climax, you will understand how much anger there was. And I would rather say you watch the film to see the anger.”

Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, Kesari Chapter 2 also stars R Madhavan and Ananya Panday.

It is releasing in theatres on April 18, 2025.
