Mumbai Indians (MI) fell to a 12-run defeat against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a thrilling encounter at the Ekana Stadium, in Lucknow. It was the home team’s second win of the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) season. The match proved to be a highly entertaining affair—one that fans would have thoroughly enjoyed after quite some time.

After winning the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first. Mitchell Marsh provided a solid start to the innings but was dismissed in the process. Following his wicket, Aiden Markram continued to attack the MI bowlers. Ayush Badoni and David Miller also chipped in with crucial contributions. However, it was Hardik Pandya who turned the tide by claiming a five-wicket haul, dismantling LSG’s middle order and preventing them from posting a more formidable total.

MI’s chase began poorly, with the openers falling early. However, young Naman Dhir showcased why the franchise has placed its faith in him. He built a crucial 69-run partnership with Suryakumar Yadav, lifting MI from 17-2. Dhir was dismissed first, followed by SKY, leaving the responsibility to Tilak Varma and Pandya.

The match came down to the final over, with MI needing 22 runs from six balls. Pandya was at the crease with Mitchell Santner, as Tilak Varma had retired hurt. Despite hitting a six off the first delivery, the MI skipper couldn’t finish the chase, leaving both the team and fans disappointed.

Key Moments from LSG vs MI, Match 16 of IPL 2025 1. Hardik Pandya's fifer

MI skipper claimed a five-wicket haul in the 16th game of the IPL, becoming the first captain in the tournament’s history to achieve this feat. It was an outstanding bowling performance, as he led by example and restricted LSG from scoring freely. However, he did prove a bit expensive, conceding 36 runs in his four overs.

2. Mitchell Marsh's sensational knock in powerplays

LSG opener Mitchell Marsh smashed a blazing half-century in the first innings. One of the highlights of the match was his 23-run assault on debutant Ashwani Kumar, who still managed a four-wicket haul. By the time Marsh was dismissed, LSG had raced to 76-1 in just under 7 overs. He scored 60 off 31 deliveries, including nine fours and two sixes.

3. Avesh Khan's final clutch over

Chasing 22 runs in the final over with Hardik Pandya on strike is no easy task. But Avesh Khan executed it brilliantly. Captain Rishabh Pant entrusted him with the final over, and though Pandya started with a six, Avesh held his nerve. He conceded just three runs in the next five balls, securing LSG’s second win of the season.
