Bengaluru school holidays: Why are institutes shut and when will they reopen?

Schools in Bengaluru are closed as Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered holidays in for all government and government-aided schools.

This is because teachers have been deployed on duty for ongoing caste survey, officially known as the Social and Educational Survey.

The survey, which began on September 22 was to be completed by October 7. However, delays in some districts forced the government to extend the deadline by 10 more days until October 18.

“We planned to finish the survey by 7 October. But while some districts are nearly done, others are still behind,” the Chief Minister told the press. For example, Koppal district has completed 97% of the survey. In Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, only 63% and 60% of the work is done, while only 34% has been completed in Bengaluru.

Around 6,700 teachers are helping with the survey in Bengaluru alone.

The Karnataka Teachers' Association and Congress MLC Puttanna asked the Chief Minister to give teachers more time to finish the work. The Education Department later declared school holidays after talking with the State Commission for Backward Classes.

Over 1.6 lakh government staff are taking part in the survey, including 1.2 lakh teachers and 40,000 other employees. Teachers who are handling mid-term exams in Pre-University Colleges do not have to take part in the survey. Special classes will be held later to make up for missed school days

Further, the government has announced Rs 20 lakh compensation to the families of three staff members who died while working on the survey.

Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar confirmed that teachers have promised in writing to help recover lost class hours by organising extra classes.

When will the schools reopen?

The schools are set to reopen after October 18. However, with Diwali immediately on October 20 and 21, schools might reopen following the festival.
