The number of housing projects registered with the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has crossed 50,000, making it the only state regulator in India to hit that milestone. As of now, 50,162 residential projects are registered with MahaRERA.
Tamil Nadu ranks second with 27,609 projects, followed by Gujarat with 15,322. These three states are the only ones in the country with over 10,000 registered housing developments.
Data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs shows that a total of 1,44,617 housing projects are registered under RERA across India, with Maharashtra accounting for about 35% of them.
“Until a few years ago, the real estate sector, which was largely limited to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region or Pune region, but now it is expanding across the state. The consistent increase in the demand for houses across Maharashtra is an indicator of state's social and economic development,” said Manoj Saunik, Chairman, MahaRERA while adding that the regulator aims to minimise homebuyer grievances.
MahaRERA was established in 2017, shortly after the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 came into effect.
Within Maharashtra, the Konkan region, which includes the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, has the highest number of registered housing projects at 23,770. Pune region follows with 15,932. Pune district alone accounts for 12,788 projects, while Thane has 6,746, Mumbai suburbs 5,907, and Raigad 5,360.
Other regional breakdowns include 4,621 projects in North Maharashtra, 2,764 in Nagpur region, 1,886 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar region, and 957 in Amravati region. Smaller territories like Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman have 180 and 52 projects, respectively.
