Starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film has become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies ever made. But what has grabbed the spotlight is that the film charted history by becoming the first Malayalam movie to cross Rs 100 crore in worldwide theatrical share.
Released on March 27, L2: Empuraan has now minted Rs 91.51 Cr, its India net collection. Mohanlal celebrated the Rs 100 crore milestone on X, calling it a proud moment for Malayalam cinema.
L2: Empuraan, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, features a star-studded cast including Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Indrajith Sukumaran. Despite stirring controversy upon its theatrical release, the makers swiftly responded by opting for a re-censor, removing the disputed scenes. Backed by producers Antony Perumbavoor, Lyca Subaskaran, and Gokulam Gopalan, the film continues to draw massive crowds.
According to early estimates by Sacnilk, the film earned over Rs 3 crore on its ninth day, pushing its domestic total to Rs.25 crore. The opening week alone brought in Rs 88.25 crore, with a dominant Rs 80.7 crore from Malayalam-speaking regions. The rest of the revenue came from its dubbed versions in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi.
L2: Empuraan maintained a strong theatrical presence, especially in Kerala, where the ninth-day occupancy averaged 20.07%, peaking at nearly 30% during night shows. In Telugu-speaking areas, occupancy reached 17.35% at its highest, while Tamil regions saw a peak of 22.58%. Hindi-speaking regions recorded lower interest, with occupancy hovering around 6.64%, peaking at 9.07%. The film’s pan-India appeal, coupled with Mohanlal’s stardom, has helped it sustain momentum across linguistic boundaries.
