Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2025: Pitru Paksha holds great significance in Hinduism. According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha begins on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Bhadrapada month and ends on the new moon day of the Ashwin month. During these 15 days, people remember their ancestors and perform tarpan, shraddha, and pind daan for them.

It is said that during Pitru Paksha, ancestors visit the earth. Performing tarpan and pind daan during Pitru Paksha helps ancestors attain salvation. If a person is unable to perform these rituals for some reason, they can also receive the blessings of their ancestors through some special lamp rituals.
Important dates for lighting lamps
According to Acharya Anand Bhardwaj of Ujjain, the new moon day of the Ashwin month will begin on the night of September 20th and continue until the night of September 21st. Therefore, according to the Udaya Tithi, the puja and Shraddha related to Sarva Pitru Amavasya will be performed on September 21, 2025. This time is considered extremely auspicious for Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan performed in memory of the ancestors.
Four Important Places to Light Lamps
1. First Lamp – At the main entrance of the house: Light a lamp with ghee or mustard oil to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Place a pot of water alongside and keep the door open. This dispels negative energy and welcomes Lakshmi.
2. Second Lamp – In the south direction, outside the house: This lamp should be with mustard oil. Mythological belief holds that on the evening of Amavasya, ancestors return from earth to their abode. If they find light on their path, they are pleased and blessed.
3. Third Lamp – At the picture of ancestors or at the memorial place: Light a lamp at the place where you have placed pictures of ancestors in the house. This symbolizes devotion and strengthens the spiritual connection.
4. Fourth Lamp – Under the Peepal Tree: Worshiping the Peepal tree on this day is especially fruitful. Light a lamp under the Peepal tree using sesame oil for the gods and mustard oil for the ancestors.

Benefits of Lighting a Lamp
These simple yet devotional measures pacify the sins of ancestors and bring happiness, prosperity, and mental peace into life. Lighting a lamp not only dispels darkness but also enlightens the soul.
