A Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-bound local train overshot the platform at Thansit railway station on Tuesday, with six of its coaches crossing the designated stop mark. The incident occurred at approximately 4:05 pm.
According to Central Railway (CR) officials, an inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the overshoot. “The train was delayed for a few minutes due to the incident,” a CR spokesperson said.
While overshooting platforms is considered a serious operational lapse, officials noted that it is less hazardous than a "Signal Passing at Danger" (SPAD) incident. However, both types of events typically point to human error, particularly lapses in judgment or concentration by the motorman.
“Though technical issues can sometimes contribute, human error is the most common cause,” a railway source said.
The incident caused inconvenience to commuters. Passengers in the front coaches were forced to alight onto the tracks to reach the platform, while those waiting at the rear end found it difficult to board the train.
