The US has given its approval to Israel’s controversial plan to occupy large parts of the Gaza Strip, including Gaza City, as confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. This development comes despite objections from the Israeli military leadership and reluctance among many Israeli citizens.
US President Donald Trump has decided not to intervene in Israel’s decision, leaving the matter entirely to the Israeli government. This stance marks a shift from his earlier efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, influenced in part by a disturbing video released by Hamas showing an Israeli hostage digging his own grave. The video reportedly shocked Trump and led him to support Israel’s right to take necessary military action.
The Israeli Security Cabinet’s plan involves occupying central Gaza and displacing approximately one million Palestinians while focusing on areas where hostages are believed to be held. Netanyahu and his allies argue that only sustained military pressure can compel Hamas to agree to a hostage release and ceasefire terms acceptable to Israel.
However, the Israeli Army Chief of Staff, General Eyal Zamir, has warned that this operation could endanger hostages and impose the burden of governing Gaza’s 2 million residents on Israel. The army fears that direct occupation will prolong the conflict and create complex humanitarian and security challenges.
While the US supports Israel’s right to defend itself, it is also involved in efforts to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians amid the crisis. Nonetheless, the ultimate decision on military action rests with the Israeli government, now given a clear green signal from Washington to proceed as they see fit.
This move signals a significant escalation in the Israel-Hamas conflict, raising concerns over massive displacement and the welfare of thousands caught in the crossfire.
