There is a BBC period drama you may have missed in time gone by, but two years on from its release, fans continue to praise it. The Gallows Pole is a three-part television series made for the BBC. Based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers. According to Meadows, it was adapted by Shane Meadows and is a prequel to Myers's novel. The 2023 series stars Michael Sorcha alongside Sophie McShera, Thomas Turgoose, Ralph Ineson and Samuel Edward-Cook.
The series synopsis reads: "The Gallows Pole is a fictionalised account of the real-life Cragg Vale Coiners, a gang of 18th-century Yorkshire weavers led by David Hartley, who committed Britain's biggest fraud by counterfeiting coins. The synopsis describes Hartley's charismatic but ruthless leadership as he uses the criminal enterprise to help the poor while clashing with a determined excise officer, William Deighton. The story, set against the backdrop of harsh moorland life and the coming industrial revolution, chronicles the gang's rise and the events leading to their downfall after a betrayal."
Fans of the series have taken to IMDb to share their thoughts on The Gallows Pole, with one describing it as "strangely compelling", adding: "If you are undecided about this miniseries, definitely give this a chance, you will not be disappointed. Historically set, yet with modern language at times, which feels almost improvised at times. If you enjoyed 'This is England', you will totally get this. Quirky and wonderfully unique. The acting and production are superb. I really hope Shane Meadows continues with this, as I am sure there is more to this story. The music score is inspired and works so well."
Another described it as a "hidden gem", adding: "It's an absolute gem and easily the best thing to come out of the BBC for years. Shane Meadows is perfect in this, absolutely flawless. A special mention also to Stevie Binns (Mand) and Sophie McShera (Grace) who both deliver excellent performances."
Lucy Mangan of the Guardian awarded the series five stars and said it was "an absolute must-see".
The Gallows Pole is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
