Matthew Selt insists he will keep showing his emotions at the table after a pep talk with Chelsea legend John Terry. Pal Jimmy Robertson told Selt as the Essex cueman won 10-9 on the final black from 8-3 down as he clinched his Crucible spot in dramatic fashion.
The Romford potter, 40, landed himself in hot water earlier this season when he was slapped with a three-month suspended ban and a £21,000 fine for "aggressive and rude" behaviour at the Saudi Arabia Masters. In December, the world No.34 stormed off whilst teenager Artemijs Zizins cleared the colours after fluking match ball in German Masters qualifying with bangs and crashes heard backstage after Selt left the arena.
And qualifier Selt, who plays Xiao Guodong in his opener on Saturday, said: "I do what I do all the time. I just commentate on my shots. If a ball's going towards the hole, as happened numerous times during the match, I'd say 'There's another one going towards the hole.'.
"But it wasn't as if I said anything after the balls had come to rest deliberately trying to put him off and that kind of stuff.
"I show my emotions. I spoke to John Terry a couple of years ago about whether to keep it in or let it out and he said 'I've known you long enough. Get it out and move on'.
"You have some people saying to keep your emotions in check and don't give your opponent anything. John was like 'Get it out and move on otherwise it's just going to build up inside you and you'll explode'.
"We saw me explode in December didn't we boys? So I just get it out. The first person to message or ring me after the Zizins outburst was John checking in to see if I was okay.
"I could reign it in a little bit, but I don't want to. That's how I play and who I am. In terms of my behaviour on the table, I've never done anything to warrant any disciplinary matters, except possibly concede [early]. My behaviour is, for me, impeccable."
