As a newly found thriller lover, I have found myself trolling through various horrors in the lead up to Halloween. But there is one film I believe to be the greatest thriller of them all, and it might surprise you. The film in question was released in 2009 and features a starry lineup including Megan Fox, Adam Brody and Amanda Seyfried. It was not appreciated at the time by the critics, but in the years after its release, it has continued to grow in popularity and gain a cult following.
It is, of course, Jennifer's Body - the thriller meets comedy film that flopped at the box office. Directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, with producer Jason Reitman, who stated that he and his producers "want to make unusual films", Cody said she wanted the film to speak to female empowerment and explore the complexities within friendships.
The film's synopsis reads: "Jennifer's Body is about a high school cheerleader who becomes a succubus and starts murdering her male classmates. The movie is also a cult classic in feminist and queer horror spaces for its themes of female rage, friendship, and homoerotic subtext. Key aspects of the film include its blend of horror and comedy, the predatory nature of the male band Low Shoulder, and the intense friendship between Jennifer and Needy."
The film was met with mixed reviews but was praised for its dialogue, emotional resonance, and performances of the cast. Following its release, it became apparent that the film's poor marketing campaign was to blame for its failure at the box office and was the result of the studio's desire to capitalise on Fox's sex appeal and gear the film towards a younger male audience. Since then, Jennifer's Body has undergone a critical re-evaluation, and many describe the movie as a feminist cult classic.
For me, that rings true. The film was misinterpreted and misunderstood; it deserves to receive its flowers, as it was culturally ahead of its time. The performances are stellar - if you haven't already seen it, give it a go.
To draw your own conclusion on Jennifer's Body, it is available for streaming right now on Disney+.
