Jannik Sinner has revealed that he sleeps until just 45 minutes before the start of his matches. The Italian won the Paris Masters for the first time in his career last weekend after claiming the Vienna Open title a week earlier.
Sinner is ranked at No. 1 in the world and will be eyeing more silverware at the ATP Finals over the next week. The talented star won the Australian Open for the second year in a row in January and clinched his first Wimbledon title in July as he took his Grand Slam title tally to four. He also won last year's US Open and will surely win plenty more Majors, with fierce rival Carlos Alcaraz proving to be his only real barrier to success these days.
Sinner will have fine-tuned his training routine during the early stages of his career and will be well aware of how to prepare himself ahead of matches. And it appears his sleeping habits could be giving him an edge.
The 24-year-old appeared at the Nike for Jannik Sinner event in Turin ahead of the ATP Finals, where he answered a series of questions.
And discussing his pre-match schedule, he explained: "Honestly, I can sleep before all the games. I wake up maybe three-quarters of an hour before the game. This is my luck, because many people find it difficult to sleep. But I - if I have time - warm-up, then eat, then sleep again. And then I play."
Sinner appears to be taking a leaf out of Cristiano Ronaldo's book, with the former Manchester United and Real Madrid footballer also relying on sleep to keep him at the top of his sport.
According to The Sun, Ronaldo takes five naps a day rather than sleeping for the whole night, with each rest period lasting for an hour and a half.
After his evening meal, Ronaldo likes to relax with friends before taking a swim at 10pm. He then takes a nap before midnight and then wakes back up again. And the 40-year-old hits the pillow once again at 3am before waking up to start his day.
Ronaldo spoke about his sleeping habits on a podcast in the summer and insisted that optimum rest is "the most important tool I have for physical and mental recovery."
Sinner will get his ATP Finals campaign underway this weekend and has been drawn in the Bjorn Borg Group.
He will go up against Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton. His third opponent will be either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Lorenzo Musetti, with the latter only able to qualify at the Canadian's expense if he wins the Hellenic Championship in Greece.
The final of the ATP Finals will be played next Sunday, with Sinner on a collision course to meet Alcaraz in the showpiece match.
