Two Manchester United stars missed in the after being forced to leave Old Trafford early. On a night of high drama, Ruben Amorim's side seemed destined to be heading out as they trailed 4-2 in extra time, and 6-4 on aggregate.
However, the final six minutes defied belief. A Bruno Fernandes penalty brought hope before Kobbie Mainoo levelled the tie in the dying seconds. Still, there was time for a winner as emergency striker Harry Maguire headed home in injury time to send the stadium into raptures.
Two players weren't there to see it though. Noussair Mazraoui was replaced by Luke Shaw at half-time and duly left the ground, along with substitute Victor Lindelof.
It was later confirmed that the pair had departed suddenly to 'address urgent family issues'. The problems were said to be personal to both Mazraoui and Lindelof and not at all linked.
later explained why he was forced into a tactical change so early, having not initially planned to use Shaw until later in the second half. Instead, it was Lindelof who was seen warming up during the interval before he abruptly left.
"Luke Shaw, he was supposed to play 30 minutes tops but then we had a problem with news at half-time," he told TNT Sports. "Vic has a personal problem, he had to leave, so all this stuff happened during the game. But in the end it was a good result."
Neither Mazraoui nor Lindelof would have envisaged their team needing an extra 30 minutes when they departed. The Red Devils led 2-0 at the break through goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, and seemed to be cruising through.
However, former Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico pulled Lyon level, and although the latter was sent off, Rayan Cherki put the visitors ahead in the first period of extra time before an Alexandre Lacazette penalty seemed to settle matters.
But then came the dramatic finale to set up a Europa League semi-final between United and Athletic Club.
