There's a "masterpiece" western drama series that has received rave reviews from fans - including for its realistic gunfight scenes. Set in the 19th century American Old West, it currently spans two seasons but has already been renewed for a third. Entitled Billy the Kid, it stars Hunger Games actor Tom Blyth as the eponymous outlaw and charts his journey from Ireland to New York.

The series also tells the stories of infamous outlaw Jesse Evans, who mysteriously disappeared in 1882, and Sheriff Pat Garrett - the lawman responsible for eventually killing Billy the Kid. It combines some of the legends of the Old West with true events, starring actors like Ty Olsson, Ian Tracey and Eileen O'Higgins.

Reviews for the "incredible" period drama insisted the show "deserves 100% five stars", with one reviewer saying: "It's an amazing realistic reenactment of the late 1800s, the visuals capture what it looked like back then, the characters are incredibly well acted."

Someone else said: "Watching the first few episodes I was hooked! Tom Blyth is superb as Billy. Understated as a man at conflict with himself. This Billy is no superhuman gunfighter. He's fallible and makes mistakes. But he's a crack shot and quick on the draw and soon earns a reputation that gets him noticed.

"A special mention must go to the cinematography, some of which is stunning, capturing vistas of open landscapes and mountains and full moons filling the sky as cowboys ride their horses across the prairies."

A third viewer said the show provides "probably the most accurate history of Billy the Kid."

While a fourth said: "I've watched westerns my entire life, 52 years now, and this is one of the best directed/produced shows in quite a while. I'm more than impressed - it's captivating!"

The show is available to stream on Prime Video.
