Notting Hill Carnival sees 140 arrested - full list of crimes including 15 attacks on cops

A total of 140 arrests have been made so far during Notting Hill Carnival, including 15 for assaults on police officers and four relating to sexual assaults.

Metropolitan Police confirmed that as of 7.45pm, they had made 140 arrests as part of its operation, including 105 at Carnival itself, and 35 on the approaches "as a result of proactive policing interventions".

Police were assisted with live facial recognition, and 13 of the 35 arrests on the approach to Carnival followed positive identifications via the new technology.

One officer required hospital treatment after sustaining injuries to their hand. The force confirmed it will ensure all officers receive the appropriate support.

More than 50 arrests were linked to illegal drugs, and 21 were due to possession of an illegal weapon.

Police were authorised additional powers as part of the Notting Hill Carnival policing operation between 10am today and 2am tomorrow morning, Monday, 25 August.

Officers had the power to search people in a specified area for weapons or dangerous items without needing to have reasonable suspicion, under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. It said this is used to prevent violence or disorder.

Officers can also use powers of the same act to require people to remove face coverings where they are being worn mainly to conceal identity, which is used to prevent intimidation, violence or disorder.

Refusal to remove a face covering if required to do so by an officer exercising this power can lead to arrest.

A dispersal order under a different act was also authorised, which gives officers the power to order someone to leave the area and not return for up to 48 hours. This power is intended to prevent crime and disorder.

The same powers will be in effect tomorrow, from 10am until 2am on Tuesday, 26 August.

On Friday, police confirmed that 100 people had been arrested ahead of the event, to "ensure the safety of all those attending Notting Hill Carnival".

The arrests resulted in 21 people being recalled to prison. Officers also seized 11 firearms and more than 40 knives, and 266 people were either given police bail or probation licence conditions not to come to Carnival this year.

Commander Charmain Brenyah, the Met's spokesperson for Carnival, said they expected around one million people to be on the streets of west London for the event.

They said: "The vast majority come to have fun and enjoy themselves, to celebrate Caribbean culture, to dance, to eat and to go home with nothing but good memories.

"Regrettably we know a minority come with less positive intentions and in recent years this has played out in the form of serious violence including three tragic incidents where lives have been taken.

"The actions of this minority are totally at odds with the values of those who care passionately about Carnival and we acknowledge those, including the event organisers, who have stood up to condemn violence and serious criminality in the run up to this weekend."
