Parsnips are a hearty root vegetable that often gets overlooked, but a simple method using an air fryer can completely change how they taste and feel. Instead of roasting them in the oven, one food expert has revealed a quick and easy way to make parsnips crisp on the outside while staying sweet and soft on the inside.
The trick is to use a honey and mustard glaze, which brings out their natural flavour while giving them a golden finish. The whole process takes just 20 minutes and needs only a handful of ingredients. Air frying also uses less oil than traditional roasting or frying, making it a healthier option too.
This method was shared by Sarah Schlichter, a registered dietitian and mum of three.
She runs a blog called Bucket List Tummy where she shares fast and healthy meals for busy families.
Sarah said she avoided buying an air fryer for a long time, but now uses it regularly to make vegetables like parsnips crispy and tasty without deep-frying.
She explained: "I really think that the air fryer helps produce crispy vegetable fries. The result is too good not to share."
The honey mustard glaze also makes the parsnips more appealing to children.
But Sarah advises skipping the honey if cooking for babies under one, as it's not safe for them to eat.
These parsnips pair well with meat, seafood or vegetarian dishes and are also a good alternative to chips or roasted potatoes.
Parsnips are full of nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and fibre. They're also filling and work well in cold weather recipes.
This air fryer recipe works best with fresh parsnips, but frozen ones can also be used if needed. Just add a few extra minutes of cooking time.
Ingredients:
- 3-4 fresh parsnips (washed and cut into 2-3 inch sticks)
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil or light olive oil
- 1 tablespoon honey (skip for babies under 1)
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
