Plants will grow stronger and "more resilient" if you do one job at night, experts have shared. Gardeners have been busy making the most of the Spring weather and making sure their outdoor spaces are ready to be over the summer months. However, there is one job that gardeners don't often do but it's one that will help their flowers grow stronger and more resistant to diseases.

Insulation specialists at along with profesisonal expert Lucy Wren have shared this simple hack that not many gardeners know about. With 15 years of experience including work in some of the UK's most famous gardens, Wren shares the top tip that she says will "supercharge" the growth of your plants. She revealed that covering your plants once the sun has gone down will help them to grow better as it protects them from , cold and wind.

She explained: "People spend time feeding, and watering, but they often forget about thermal protection. As the sun sets, the temperature drops rapidly, and plants lose heat fast. If you cover them at the right time - just as the sun goes down - you help trap in the warmth they've stored all day."

She tells gardeners that covering plants at dusk can reduce overnight heat loss by up to 45%. Meanwhile, gardeners who have tried the hack have reported 50 % fewer pest issues with their plants.

Additionally, studies suggest that properly protected plants grow up to 35% faster in early spring. Covering your plants at night will help them stay warmer, but there are a number of other benefits that Wren lists.

She says that covering your plants after sunset also protects them from wind and sudden frosts, deters nocturnal pests, preserves moisture in the soil and shields plants from rain that might happen overnight.

She said: "Think of it as putting your plants to bed properly. It's one of the easiest ways to encourage healthier, more resilient growth."

When it comes to covering your plants at night, she recommends using breathable fleece or cloches that insulate but still allow airflow. She explained: "You don't want to suffocate the plant - just help it retain the warmth and moisture it already has."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Heat Pump Covers said: "The idea is simple: protect what matters most in your garden before the temperature drops. Whether it's a heat pump or a delicate seedling, insulation and timing make all the difference. Covering up at dusk is a small action with a big impact - smart, practical, and backed by science."
