Rio Ferdinand's son has signed his maiden professional contract with Premier League outfit Brighton. Rio, who won six Premier League titles with Manchester United throughout his illustrious career, spoke about his pride after eldest son Lorenz penned his first senior deal.

Lorenz originally joined Brighton's academy set-up back in 2022 and plays as a goalkeeper for the Seagulls. He made his under-18 debut three years ago and has since worked his way through the youth teams, including several appearances for the under-21 side.

A work experience loan to Havant and Waterlooville followed last year, but Ferdinand Jr. has since been rewarded with a professional contract of his own. The shot-stopper took to Instagram to reveal the news, sharing a photo of him signing the contract, coupled with the caption: "Happy to sign my first professional contract @officialbhafc."

Ferdinand Snr. and his wife Kate, were the first to lead the tributes, saying: "Very proud moment for the family, Lorenz signing his first professional contract. We are all so proud of you."

Lorenz was quick to receive congratulations from a number of big-name figures from the world of football, including Rio's former team-mate Edwin van der Sar. The ex-Dutch goalkeeper said: "Come on Lorenz and become the GK that you always wanted to be! Good luck and safe hands!"

Former United defender Patrice Evra added: "Amazing," whereas Phil Neville and Robbie Keane were amongst the other former pros to chime in. Whereas goalkeeping icon Shay Given also said: "Best of luck [praise emoji]."

It comes after Rio previously admitted his children used to respond badly to his football advice, despite all the trophies and England caps he'd won throughout his time as a player. Speaking to the Independent, Ferdinand claimed: "Even though I played, when I told them about football when they were 12, 13, 14 years old, they were like 'What do you know?'

"They were listening to their football coach - who'd never played a league game in his life or been a professional - and coming in and saying 'But so-and-so said this dad'.Because you're the parent, they see too much of you sometimes, so they don't want to hear it."

Lorenz has already signed with management contract with agency New Era Global Sports, who father Rio is an ambassador for. Commenting at the time, Rio said: "Our eldest is on his own journey in football. Another nice moment signing with @neweraglobalsports, well earned through hard work and dedication. It's a long road full of ups and downs, so the right and professional support is required - so step forward @neweraglobalsports. Love you Lorenz."
