The beautiful Italian city that's 'better than Venice' and has less crowds

For the many desperate to explore the gems of Italy, there is no better place to visit than and its stunning canals and architecture. But as more and more make the same choice, the Floating City is becoming too much to bear for both residents and those looking for a less chaotic holiday.

As a result, the hunt for stunning, affordable and, most importantly, less busy, and cities is on. Luckily, one of the best options is not too far from Venice, just a short 40-minute drive away. As an added bonus, the town hosts numerous cultural events and festivals throughout the year, meaning it's a perfect place to visit at any time of year.

Treviso is located in the Veneto region of northern , which, according to Lonely Planet, is often "eclipsed by its more impressive neighbours" but offers an "authentic" experience "medieval city walls, lots of pretty canals, narrow cobbled streets and frescoed churches".

The pretty town even has its own airport, and lies close to the city centre - just a 12-minute car journey away. Travellers can book a direct flight from the UK, with prices starting from just £43 return with , departing from East Midlands Airport in May.

Treviso's historic centre is known for its picturesque canals, medieval walls, and well-preserved architecture. Among its must-see destinationsd are the Piazza dei Signori, the Cathedral of Treviso (Duomo), and the Church of San Nicolò.

For a bit of culture, head to one of the town's museums or art galleries, such as the Museo di Santa Caterina, which houses impressive and artistic collections.

Treviso is renowned for its culinary specialties, including radicchio (a type of chicory) and , which is believed to have originated in the region.

If you are determined to tick a canal boat tour off your bucket list, fear not, as in Treviso you can also hitch a ride on a boat and sail the river Sile, which threads its way through the streets and acts almost as a ring road around the city.

Recent visitors have not been shy in hiding their praises of Treviso, either. One tourist, who visited in February, said: "A very beautiful, family friendly, quiet city where you can walk around all day, eat and drink. Many places to visit to see in peace without stepping on tourists' feet.

"I left this city feeling fulfilled and it was the best option to stay here and take the train to Venice.

"Depending on what you are looking for, you will find many options here, from museums to nightlife, which I can say is quite varied."

Another said: "More than describing it, it is better to experience it, without haste, stopping at one of the many bars, observe its canals, enjoy a tiramisu."
