Once considered a true gem of the rich British coastline, it's safe to say it has all gone quite wrong in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. Nestled on the Humber estuary, the seaside town had been a tourism hotspot since as far back as the 19th century - but now, due to under-investment and the boom of the foreign holiday, it now sits a souless shell of its former self.
With a population of around 29,678 people, and an average house price of £167,000, it is also home to a once bustling theme park. The huge Pleasure Island attraction has been left dormant since 2016 and is showing no signs of revival. Developers had once promised to invest a staggering £65 million to make something of the site, with plans to turn it into lodges and flats, but that has not got anywhere whatsoever as the area is worryingly being left to its own devices.
Popular travel YouTube channel, , which has over 85,000 subscribers, recently paid Cleethorpes a visit, and it's safe to say they were less than impressed.
"This is supposed to be a place where people come for their holidays, talk about a budget holiday" they remarked. "What is it? A place where the homeless go on holiday because it's scraping the bottom of the barrel."
Crime appears to be a major issue at the once beloved cultural hub, with the town having the third highest crime rate in the whole county of Lincolnshire - a lot of it linked to alcohol, as revealed by Turdtowns.
"Smashed glass and litter is everywhere around your feet as you struggle to comprehend whether this is a holiday destination," they admitted.
But it's not all doom and gloom apparently. Cleethorpes is hope to a "genuinley nice beach" which looks at its most exotic in the summertime, perfect to settle down, pitch up your sunbeds and catch some rays.
The accompanying promenade, however, which at one time could be pitted up against Britain's best, is now "a shanty town of decaying huts" in a sight that is now "not very impressive".
And though the buildings and dwellings dotted around the town are "actually very nice", it is now considered a dying area and a stark warning has been issued to tourists considering visiting for a staycation.
"Cleethorpe needs to move on from its past as a tourist attraction," said Turdtowns. "It's depressing and boring, don't come here."
