Panaji: In order to ensure a stronger and wider internet coverage in the state, particularly in the hinterland, the IT has picked 66 locations for setting up 4G towers in Goa.

Out of these 66 locations, BSNL set up 17 towers which are currently live and operational, providing mobile connectivity in rural areas, including remote villages like Morpirla in Quepem Taluka, said a govt official.

“These towers are being set up under the Centre’s 4G saturation project. The PMO said that while 5G connectivity is being developed and rolled out, most parts of India don’t have mobile towers, and continuous telephone connectivity is lacking,” said an IT dept official.

The 66 dark spots in the state were identified by BSNL, local MLAs, and the department over a period of one and a half years.

“Govt has said that it will identify govt land and give it to set up the towers, no questions asked. Forest areas are more challenging, and in some areas, we don’t have govt land or panchayat buildings. 200 villages in the state don’t have a panchayat building and land,” said the official.

The department has asked the two district collectors to fast-track the identification of govt land in each of the 66 locations and to grant approvals as quickly as possible.

“The rollout for the remaining locations is currently in progress. Initially, the pace was slow, but now it has picked up. Morpila did not have a single tower. There are so many such locations,” said a department official.
