VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan's youngest son, Mark Shankar, was injured in a fire accident at his school in Singapore.
Mark sustained injuries to his hands and legs and experienced respiratory distress due to smoke inhalation. He is presently hospitalised and undergoing treatment.
At the time of the incident, Pawan Kalyan was on a tour in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district.
Despite being urged by officials and party leaders to immediately suspend his tour and travel to Singapore, he remained steadfast in fulfilling his promise to visit Kuridi village near Araku.
“I had assured the tribal community of Kuridi that I would visit their village and address their concerns. I will honour that commitment before departing,” he said.
After completing his visit to the Agency area in ASR district, Pawan Kalyan will proceed to Singapore from Visakhapatnam on Tuesday afternoon.
His scheduled visit to the zoo park and review meetings in Vizag city have been cancelled due to this unforeseen situation.
"Upon arrival, the fire was raging on the second and third floors of a 3-storey shophouse. Several persons were on a ledge outside the third-floor unit. Members of the public, including construction workers, used a metal scaffolding and a ladder to reach those stranded and brought a number of them to safety," the Singapore Civil Defence force said in a Facebook post.
"SCDF immediately deployed rescue ladders and a Combined Platform Ladder to rescue the rest of the stranded persons on the ledge. At the same time, firefighters proceeded to the second and third floor to fight the fire. The fire was extinguished with three water jets within 30 minutes, " the post added.
