VISAKHAPATNAM: A seven-year-old boy died after he drowned in the private swimming pool of Vishwanadh Sports Club located at Akkayyapalem under fourth-town police station limits in Vizag city.
The boy allegedly drowned due to the negligence of the management of the sports club. The incident has unmasked the grave safety gaps in the swimming pool and raised concern over the safety of children in the swimming pools during the swimming summer camps in parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Though the incident took place on Monday night, it came to light on Tuesday after the parents of the victim boy approached the police.
The deceased was identified as V Rishi Sai Kumar, a class-II student and resident of Madhavadhara locality in Vizag city.
As per the reports, five persons, including three children of two families had gone to the Vishwanadh Sports Club on Monday evening. The guardians (mother of the deceased and another woman) of the children gave a specified amount to the swimming pool management to allow the three children to play in the water.
However, the guardians of the children remained outside the pool as the staff of the sports club assured that they will take adequate safety measures.
The three children ventured into the kid’s section swimming pool and after a few minutes Rishi Sai Kumar ventured into a nearby swimming pool (waves swimming pool) and struggled to stay afloat for a few minutes.
It was only after the boy lost consciousness that one of the staff of the sports club noticed the boy and jumped into the pool to take him out. When Kumar was rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead.
The relatives of the victim said that Rishi Sai Kumar was the only son of V Garaga Rao (Gangadhar) and V Srilakshmi. The management of the sports club did not inform the mother of the boy after the incident and they shifted the boy to a private hospital, where he was declared dead.
Speaking to TOI, Inspector of fourth-town police station, A Satyanarayana said they have registered a case based on the complaint from the victim boy’s father. The investigation is on to ascertain the exact reasons for the death of the boy and to establish the safety norms in the swimming pool.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, Vizag North MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju of BJP said the negligence of the management sports club was the reason for the death of the boy. He demanded the authorities to inspect the safety norms at the sports club and take necessary action against.
