The US has experienced the worst flu season it has seen in decades. As of Mar. 29, there have been at least 45 million illnesses, 580,000 hospitalizations, and 25,000 deaths from flu so far this season in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Recovering from flu isn’t easy. Even after recovery, some people may not necessarily feel energetic. Dr Rupy Aujla, who goes by the name Dr's Kitchen on TikTok has now shared some essential things he has in his flu and cold recovery kit.

A London-based doctor, Aujla specializes in General Practice and Emergency Medicine. He is also a best-selling author, and nutritionist, who has won the likes of many including Hollywood star Chris Evans.

In a video shared on Instagram, the doctor has shared the 4 essentials in his flu recovery tool box. Dr. Aujla notes that prior to the 4 essentials, one has to get as much rest as possible to recover completely. “The first thing I want to prioritize is rest. So it might sound counterintuitive or even obvious but actually rest is probably the best thing that you can do to ensure that you're not prolonging viral illness,” he says.

The UK doctor notes that most people tr to push past the uncomfortable phase, however, what’s important is to listen to your gut. “Actually you wanna lean into, what your body is intuitively telling you to do. Which is to just take a little bit of rest. Actually sleep as much as possible. Sleep is probably the best immune booster that you can lean into,” he said.

Herbal tea
The first thing on his list is a herbal tea. Yes, you heard that right. The infection must have been heavy on your throat, and there’s nothing like a herbal tea, to soothe it. You only need two ingredients for the tea - Ginger and cinnamon. “I like to use fresh ground ginger into some hot water with a bit of cinnamon. These all have anti inflammatory effects that may improve viral symptoms,” the doctor adds.

Saline spray
Dr. Aujla also suggests keeping saline sprays handy. With flu season comes congestion, which often becomes hard to control. Having a saline spray can help with this difficulty according to him. He adds, “A saline spray clears congestion and may even reduce the duration of illness.

Steam inhalation
Next on the list prepping some steam. Just like saline spray, steam inhalation too can clear congestion, and could also ease up the respiratory symptoms you may experience. “So there is some evidence that it can loosen mucus, not very nice to talk about, and that will help you breathe easier as well,” he says.

Ready to go broths
There is nothing more soothing than having a hot bowl of soup when you are ill. Dr. Aujla recommends prepping some ready-to-go broths. “These are perfect when you are too tired to cook, but need something nourishing,” he says.

The doctor adds that he often preps the broth in advance in batches at home, so it's easy to grab one, while ill. “Me and my wife always have frozen broth ready to go. So we make a big batch and we freeze it in those big ice cubes and just have that in some hot water so we can have some broth whenever we feel cold coming on.”
