"Don't ever disrespect Kamara like that": Cam Skattebo's NFL comparisons spark debate as insiders urge for more realistic player parallels

Cam Skattebo, Arizona State’s standout running back, has been turning heads with his record-breaking college season, but as the NFL Draft approaches, he's also been caught in a swirl of comparisons and speculation. While analysts praise his production and versatility, others question how his game will translate to the pros and whether comparisons to players like Peyton Hillis do justice to his unique style.

NFL analysts and fans clash over Cam Skattebo’s future as he faces flawed comparisons
College and NFL media often compare players across levels, but these parallels can miss the mark. Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo is a clear example he's been unfairly likened to Peyton Hillis despite having a different style. Skattebo had a stellar season, breaking ASU’s rushing record and becoming the first to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards in a year. Still, his agility is a noted weakness, and he's projected as a Day 3 NFL Draft pick, trailing behind Omarion Hampton and Ashton Jeanty.

Peyton Hillis' peak came in 2010 with 1,177 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Though Skattebo's current stats surpass those, the comparison still feels off they’re different players with different strengths.

Insider Benjamin Allbright told PHNX, “I mean, they play with the same attitude and that’s about the only thing that’s similar there.Peyton Hills was like 45 pounds heavier, was taller, was faster, [and] had better hand, […] Let’s, let’s use realistic comparisons, sir.”

Allbright commented on Skattebo’s NFL future, saying , “I would say there’s a role for him in the NFL probably as a third down type back […] Maybe some chess piece type stuff on a few other things. You can maybe make him a returner with these new return rules and do a few other things with him here or there.”

In addition to Peyton Hillis, Cam Skattebo has also been compared to New Orleans Saints star Alvin Kamara a comparison made by ESPN. Kamara entered the draft after just two seasons at Tennessee, where he racked up 1,294 yards and 16 touchdowns in 24 games. Now, after eight seasons in the NFL, he’s amassed 6,779 yards and 60 touchdowns. Physically, Kamara and Skattebo are quite similar, both standing at 5'10" with only minor differences in build. However, despite those surface-level similarities, their play styles and career paths are notably different.

In contrast to Peyton Hillis, who was associated with Skattebo due to his aggressive, straight-line running style, Alvin Kamara takes a more measured approach. He’s perceptive and known for being nimble and evasive, as noted by Athlon Sports. Kamara takes time to evaluate his options before making a move. Fans of Kamara have made it clear that this comparison doesn’t resonate well with them.

One fan sharply remarked, “Don’t ever disrespect Kamara like that again.” While Skattebo has his strengths, his weaknesses are just as evident. In contrast, Kamara has forged a remarkable NFL career despite a relatively short college tenure. As of 2023, he holds seven records with the Saints, including most career rushing touchdowns and most receptions by a running back. Another fan added, “Skattebo is not AK lol… apparently speed doesn’t factor in.” This comment holds some truth, as Kamara is faster, running a 4.56 in the 40-yard dash compared to Skattebo’s time.

In the end, while it’s common for analysts and fans alike to draw comparisons between players from different levels of football, the case of Cam Skattebo highlights the limitations of such comparisons. Whether being compared to Peyton Hillis for his power-running style or to Alvin Kamara for his agility and versatility, these parallels fail to fully capture what makes Skattebo unique. Each of the players he’s been compared to has carved out their own identity in the NFL, with their strengths, weaknesses, and playing styles all being distinct in their own right.
