NEW DELHI: Sukhbir Singh Badal has been re-elected as the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Posting on X, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) wrote, “Congratulations to Punjab’s development man, Sukhbir Singh Badal, on becoming the president of Shiromani Akali Dal. May Sukhbir Singh Badal firmly guard the rights of the Panth and Punjab and make Punjab prosperous again.”
Sukhbir Badal, a prominent figure in Punjab politics , is the son of the late Parkash Singh Badal , a five-time chief minister of the state. He has led the SAD through multiple electoral battles and political shifts, especially in recent years as the party recalibrated its position following its exit from the NDA alliance .
Sukhbir Badal has also served as deputy chief minister of Punjab and held portfolios focused on development, infrastructure and industry.
This marks another term for Badal, who will replace Balwinder Singh Bhunder , the current working president of the party.
Soon after his re-election as president, Badal addressed a press conference in Chandigarh, thanking his supporters.
Last November, Badal had resigned from the presidency of the SAD, leaving the party without a formal leader amid mounting challenges, including declining electoral performance, internal dissent, and his ongoing struggle to revive his political career after being labelled tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht.
