NEW DELHI: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 28 lives, mostly tourists, calling it an assault not just on innocent civilians but on " Kashmiriyat " itself.
Expressing remorse, Mufti said, "The attack that happened yesterday, it is not only an attack on innocent tourists, it is also an attack on Kashmiriyat, we condemn this, it will not be tolerated. The home minister is here, he should be finding out the people involved, so that punishment is given as soon as possible. People come here to have a good time, it is a cowardly attack, I want to say to people of the country that we are ashamed, Kashmir is ashamed, we are standing with you in this time of crisis. There should be a strict action. I want to apologise to the people of our country."
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, she added, "This was an attack not just by the terrorists on the people but also on our Kashmiriyat and us. I request the Union home minister to find out who the perpetrators were so that they can be punished. We are ashamed that this incident happened in Kashmir, and we stand with those affected."
On social media, Mufti reiterated her stance, "I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which tragically killed five and injured several as being reported for now. Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced. Historically, Kashmir has welcomed tourists warmly, making this rare incident deeply concerning. A thorough investigation is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice and examine potential security lapses. Ensuring visitor safety is paramount, and steps must be taken to prevent future attacks. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families."
Earlier in the day, Mufti led a protest march from the PDP headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park to Lal Chowk city centre, joined by party leaders and supporters. The marchers carried placards that read, "This is an attack on all of us," "Killing innocents is an act of terror," and "Stop innocent killings."
Tuesday’s attack in the Baisaran meadows near Pahalgam has been described as one of the worst on civilians in the region in recent years. Survivors said six terrorists in army fatigues targeted victims based on religion, asking them to identify themselves and recite Islamic verses before opening fire.
