US President Donald Trump lashed out at Fox News host Karl Rove on Sunday night, calling him a "total loser" after the former White House official criticised the Trump administration's unforced errors during the first 100 days in office and his declining poll numbers.
Trump shared a post on Truth Social saying: "I don't need Karl Rove of Fox News to tell me what to do. The guy's a total loser who's been wrong about almost everything."
The outburst came after Rove during an appearance on Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy, analysed Trump’s struggles in the polls and gave advice for improving his second-term communication strategy.
He also compared Trump to "Mr. Scrooge," saying his handling of tariffs was misleading and that his economic approval was slipping.
"We elected him for a variety of reasons that were important: inflation, the border, DEI, the military, respect for America," Rove stated during his Fox News interview.
"[But] things like tweeting out a picture of you as the pope is deeply offensive to a great many people," he added.
This criticism came following public outrage after the US president shared an AI-generated image depicting himself in papal attire and mitre, whilst joking with journalists about becoming the next pope.
Rove additionally questioned Trump's approach to the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, involving the Maryland father wrongly deported to El Salvador's CECOT mega-prison.
"This guy from Maryland. I don’t know if he’s a good guy or a bad guy, I don’t know if he’s a gang member or not. The fact is, bring him back to the United States. Lay out the facts in a court of law, and get it done," Rove said.
Trump's criticism emerged shortly after he called for Fox News presenter Howard Kurtz to "retire" following a Media Buzz segment that examined Trump's dismissal of National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
Despite Kurtz's attempts to support Trump during the discussion, the president criticised his performance as "pathetic". Sharing a separate post on Truth Social, the president said, "It is time for Howie Kurtz to retire! Every Woke Anchor in the Business, people that no one watched from CNN, MSDNC, and others, are plastered all over his show, with all really negative and fake statements, and then I am weakly “defended” by Howie and his group (although Ben Domenech has been strong!)."
"The case Howie makes for me is so pathetic that it would be a lot better if he didn’t say anything. Anyway, that’s the way it is!" he added.
