New York’s iconic World Trade Center witnessed a special early morning yoga session Monday as yoga practitioners gathered on its 102nd floor for a special session to mark the 75-day countdown to the 11th International Day of Yoga .
The event, hosted by the Consulate General of India in New York , was held at the One World Observatory—located at the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Built at the site of the former Twin Towers destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.
Consul General Binaya Pradhan opened the event by highlighting how the over hour-long session symbolised not only a countdown to Yoga Day but also the spirit of peace, resilience and hope. “It’s a powerful way to begin the day with peace and positivity,” the consulate said in a post on X.
The session was led by Ruchika Lal from the Art of Living Foundation and included yogasanas, breathwork, and meditation. Participants included Deputy Consul General Vishal Harsh, members of the Indian diaspora, students, and yoga enthusiasts.
Before beginning the session, Lal reminded participants of the building’s tragic history, noting that the practice of yoga here represented unity and healing. “Yoga is about bringing people together. That we are all here in peace is quite incredible,” she added.
Leading up to International Yoga Day on June 21, several yoga events are planned across the United States, including sessions at Times Square and the United Nations headquarters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led a similar landmark session at the UN in 2023, years after day’s first global observance in 2014.
