The highly anticipated Cannes Film Festival 2025 has commenced, showcasing films from across the globe. Among the featured works is the independent film 'The Second Wind', featuring performances by Indira Baikerikar, Mayura Shivalkar, and Nandinee Khosla. The film's creation and its premiere at Cannes represent a significant achievement for the entire team. In an exclusive conversation, the cast and crew of 'The Second Wind' reflect on their journey, the challenges faced, and the excitement surrounding their Cannes debut.
Inspiration Behind 'The Second Wind'
'The Second Wind' draws from the real-life experiences of Indira Baikerikar, who serves as the film's writer, director, and producer. The narrative is inspired by her daughter Mallika's path to recovery following a transformative event. Additionally, Mayura Shivalkar, a cancer and coma survivor who has completed seven marathons, stars in the film. Nandinee Khosla, who actively supports cancer patients, is making her acting debut with this project.
A Surprising Journey to Cannes
Discussing the film's journey to the Cannes Film Festival, Indira expressed, "It was both a surprise and a blessing. I always envisioned attending Cannes for my film's screening, but I never anticipated it would happen so soon. I feel incredibly fortunate, and our team radiated positive energy throughout this process."
An All-Women Led Project
When asked about the film being led by women, Indira explained that it was not a deliberate choice. She stated, "It just unfolded that way. I felt the need to produce the film myself rather than seek out producers. This is my debut, and I wanted to ensure it was done right. The film's sports-centric theme resonated with me, and I found it challenging to connect with directors who hadn't experienced similar lives."
Lessons for the Younger Generation
The film emphasizes the importance of second chances in life. Nandinee, at just 24, shared insights for her generation, saying, "We often perceive our first problem as insurmountable. It's crucial to understand that this is merely the beginning of your journey, not the end. You will learn and grow through your experiences."
Personal Growth Through Challenges
Reflecting on her own struggles, Nandinee added, "I was recovering from a slip disc and felt my life was over. However, during the filming, I realized that my challenges were largely mental. Surrounding myself with positive energy helped me regain my motivation and perform at my best. The film showcases that journey."
Mayura's Inspirational Story
Mayura Shivalkar, who has triumphed over cancer and coma, shared her courageous journey. She stated, "Cancer never defeated me; I rose to my feet. After enduring multiple surgeries and treatments, I stand today because of the love and support around me. The right treatment, supportive people, and a good doctor are essential for recovery. This film represents my second wind."
Empowering Women to Prioritize Health
Mayura emphasized the importance of self-care for women, advising, "Every woman should dedicate time for herself, just as she does for her family and career. Investing time in sports is vital for both mental and physical well-being."
